Create a worm bin

By Al and Gus Grumet

It is easy and fun to create a worm bin at home. Harness the magic of red wiggler worms and soil microbes to turn food scraps and food-soiled paper into organic fertilizer, which you can use in your vegetable garden or landscape. Food scraps tossed in the garbage bin rot in the landfill and produce methane, a harmful greenhouse gas.  Food scraps that are composted improve soil, help retain water and reduce the need for pesticides.

Vermicomposting (composting with worms!) goes even further by avoiding emissions from transporting green waste and enhancing your ability to grow your own food. Your children and grandchildren will have a blast exploring the bustling web of life involved in the process.
